PROJECTS FOR SCHOOLS

As a parent myself and having also been Chair of Governors in a Reading school for ten years, I have always felt an affinity with school building projects.
Some architectural work in this field is essentially technical in nature; organising the improvement of infrastructure or ancillary facilities, for example.
Other projects have involved more extensive and fully designed work such as the Arts Room and Hall extension at Corpus Christi School in Portsmouth illustrated here.
Funding is particularly difficult much of the time and so careful financial management of the project is one of the key aspects of our service here.
We always look to introduce some new and original ideas that the school will hopefully like and may have not already considered.
SCHOOL PROJECTS

Corpus Christi School in Southsea

This is one of the very enjoyable projects we have had in recent times.
The school Hall was outdated and to be replaced and there was a need for additional staff room space and teaching space in the form of an Arts Room.
The existing single storey hall was demolished and a new wing designed in replacement, constructed on two storeys and so doubling the floorspace on the plot.
The new Hall is at ground floor level and is equipped to a high standard with a range of current technology.
The Arts Room and Staff Room are both at first floor, accessed by a lift and an easy stair within a glazed stair well with open views to the rear of the Corpus Christi Church to which the school is linked.

SCHOOL PROJECTS

St Swithun’s School

School sites are often subject to change, keeping up with pupil numbers and accommodation standards.
The staff at St Swithun’s were looking to improve the interior environment of the school which was outdated in certain areas.
Together we devised a scheme to reconfigure the circulation areas and at the classrooms, created new room entrances, toilets and smaller rooms for private conversation to be held on a one-to-one basis.
These latter rooms were shaped as the hull of a boat reflecting the location of the site in Southsea and gave interior interest and a sense of fun, opening out the circulation areas leading to the classrooms.
The first phase of the improvements are now completed, having involved a re-planning of the ground floor teaching areas and a review of the heating and ventilation services and infrastructure throughout the school.
SCHOOL PROJECTS

St Paul’s School

This was a design exercise to examine the best location for an extension to a rambling set of buildings to provide two new classrooms, support accommodation and a new reception area.
The scheme was to be of a contemporary design and to stand alone adjacent to the existing buildings to lift the appearance of the site at the entrance to the school complex.
